Welcome! We’re Frances and Matthew. In 2021, we fulfilled our dream of buying land and starting a farm. It was just the beginning…
Have you ever ever ridden a roller-coaster with an uncooperative cow and an overly-friendly dog? If so, you might have an idea of how “exhilarating” it would be for two philosophy majors with a young family and little prior experience to dive headfirst into farming.
With a few years’ experience under our belts, the roller-coaster is . . . still a roller-coaster. However, after going around a few times, we’ve learned to brace ourselves for the most exciting parts of the ride.
We continue to marvel at the sheer beauty of farming, and the many benefits it has brought to our family. An education in classical philosophy might not be the most obvious preparation for a life on the farm. But at least it’s made us smarter than our animals, and ready to outwit them as needed.
Reflecting on the higher things has also given us a clear sense of purpose in dealing with . . . “the lower things.” There have been many occasions for us to ask ourselves “Why in the world are we doing this?” We do have an answer, thank goodness.

Of course, there are certain aspects of farming that are quite conducive to thought and reflection. On a given day, you might find us admiring our peacefully grazing flocks and herds, or enjoying the beauty of a sunrise while milking the cows. On the other hand, we might also be hurriedly pulling on our boots and shaking our fists in the general direction of the aforementioned flocks and herds as we rush to return them to their designated locations.
Other common occupations include spending too much time disentangling ourselves from our moveable electric fencing, and guzzling large quantities of the world’s best raw milk. Most of our animals have names, and so does most of the meat in our freezer.
We’re constantly working to grow our farming skills, and strategizing to overcome the roadblocks we encounter. Here, we’ll share various snapshots from our many farming adventures. We hope to provide our readers with inspiration, entertainment, and maybe even some practical ideas, too.
